How to care for bed sheets?

Regular and careful maintenance of your bed linen is essential to ensure it lasts over time.

Bed sheets made from synthetic or natural fibres are not cared for in the same way, nor are cotton and linen models.

To help you see things more clearly, the Sylvie Thiriez home linen brand shares its advice on washing, drying and folding flat sheets according to their material.

How to machine wash bed sheets?

Whether made from cotton, linen, percale or cotton percale, all Sylvie Thiriez bed sheets can be machine-washed at 60°C. You may use the pre-set programmes on your washing machine if you wish (cotton, delicate, synthetic, etc.). If in doubt, refer to the care instructions shown on the product label. We recommend placing only your bed linen set in the drum to avoid overloading the machine and to wash your sheets effectively. Preferably use a mild detergent, especially when washing linen or percale sheets.

In the event of a stain, such as blood, you can rub the affected area with an ice cube — a method that is particularly effective when used within hours of the stain appearing. If necessary, a few drops of white vinegar can be poured onto the stained area; leave it to act for a few minutes before starting a low-temperature wash cycle.

How to dry sheets?

Sheet drying methods vary depending on the material. Cotton sheets, known for being easy to care for, can be tumble-dried at a moderate temperature. Be careful not to overload your tumble dryer to prevent excessive creasing and the formation of a ball of laundry. For linen, percale or washed percale sheets, air drying is preferable to avoid damaging the more delicate fibres. You can hang your bed linen outdoors, in a garden or on a balcony, avoiding direct sunlight, which may cause discolouration.

It is also possible to dry your sheets indoors, in a well-ventilated room and at a reasonable distance from radiators. If you are short on time, linen or percale sheets can still be tumble-dried.

To minimise creases, make sure to select a low-temperature cycle.

How to fold sheets?

Before folding your sheets, we recommend ironing cotton or percale sheets at a moderate temperature. There is no need to iron washed percale bed linen, which has a naturally crinkled appearance; if you still wish to iron it, choose a low heat setting. Ironing linen sheets is optional: you may keep their natural crinkled look or iron them at a low or moderate temperature.

To make folding easier, we suggest working on a flat surface (bed, large table or ironing board). Start folding your sheets lengthwise to reduce bulk. Fold your sheet in half, making sure the seams are placed inside. To properly align the edges and prevent future creasing, smooth the fabric with your hand. Then fold again lengthwise, folding one side first and then folding the second side over the first. You can now fold your sheet in half and then into quarters widthwise.

You will obtain a carefully washed, dried and folded sheet that can be stored in a cool, dry place for later use. It is recommended to renew the care of your bed sheets every one to two weeks so that they retain their brightness and freshness. By following these simple care precautions, you can keep your bed sheets in better condition for longer.
