Cushion cover
Cushion Cover
A cushion, in the generic sense of the term, consists of an "inner" — or "insert" — filled with fibers, down, feathers, or foam flakes. The whole thing slips into a cover often closed with a very discreet zipper. This exterior and removable element made of fabric or cotton gives the cushion its decorative power. It also makes it more practical! A cushion is often accompanied by a cover, unless you appreciate the object in its raw state: a more or less dense padding made of feathers, down, polyester fibers, foam, or latex, all held together by a textile shell.
Sizes and Materials of a Cushion Cover
Some cushions do not have a separate decorative cover: their outer fabric, colored and/or decorated with patterns, is sewn directly around the filling. This model, often light and less thick, is also much more difficult to maintain (see below). Square cushion covers are the most common, notably in 40 × 40, 45 × 45, or 50 × 50 cm. These covers are suitable for sofa, armchair, or bed cushions. Rectangular covers, often offered in 30 × 50 or 40 × 60 cm, adapt to lumbar cushions, longer bolster-type cushions, or purely decorative cushions placed in front of pillows. Many covers are made of cotton or other polyester fibers. These materials have many advantages: cotton is a natural fiber that is soft, breathable, and pleasant to the touch. A cotton cover washes easily and is suitable for daily use. Polyester is a synthetic, resistant, lightweight, and wrinkle-resistant fiber: it dries quickly and retains its colors well. The material, fabric quality, and dimensions naturally influence the price of the cushion. Cushion covers can be plain or multicolored, and adorned with graphic, floral, or animal patterns. Some covers feature embroidery, pompoms, velvet, or faux fur. There are also fleece cushion covers: these models are made from a soft and warm fabric, appreciated in winter. Finally, another practical aspect, most cushion covers close with a zipper, others with buttons or a envelope flap.
The Cushion Without a Cover and Maintenance Constraints
In the absence of a removable cover, the entire cushion must be washed (unless otherwise stated on its care label). Machine washing is especially suitable for cushions filled with synthetic fibers or certain feathers. It is best to use little detergent and choose a delicate program, a low temperature, and moderate spinning. Two laundry balls can preserve the loft of the filling. Hand washing, recommended for fragile, bulky cushions or those without clear instructions, generally limits deformation. Memory foam, latex, or compact foam cushions generally do not go in the washing machine. Water can alter their structure. Cleaning with a damp cloth is more appropriate. The removable cover clearly simplifies cushion maintenance. Equipped with a zipper, it removes easily and usually goes in the washing machine (its cotton or polyester fibers withstand regular washing well). The cover also protects the inside of the cushion from stains, dust, perspiration, and wear. Through its colors and patterns, it gives the cushion its purely decorative character.
Sylvie Thiriez Cushion Covers: Materials, Colors, and Styling Ideas
The Sylvie Thiriez collection brings together cushion covers in quite varied styles, with an important place given to soft materials, embroidery, and natural or deep colors. The sizes remain easy to integrate into an interior: many cushion covers measure 45 × 45 cm, a classic format for a sofa or armchair, and several rectangular models exist in 30 × 50 or 30 × 60 cm. This alternation between square cushions and elongated cushions makes it possible to vary volumes with only two formats. The price of a cushion cover depends in particular on its material, size, and finishes.
Fleece Cushions in a Cozy Living Room
The "Grandeur nature", "Après-ski caramel", "Chalet d’alpage" (charcoal color), and "L’Envol" cushion covers use a 100% polyester velvet fleece of 280 g. "Grandeur nature" stands out with its deep red and embroidered decor. On a beige, ecru, or light gray sofa, two cushions from this collection immediately bring a warmer color. An "Après-ski caramel" cushion placed in the center easily completes the set. Natural oak flooring, a beige rug, and ecru curtains extend this palette without overloading it. The charcoal "Chalet d’alpage" cushion cover naturally finds its place on a light gray sofa or a cognac leather armchair. Its embroidered alpine landscape provides a discreet pattern and a moderate color palette. It also pairs with a Cocon ebony faux fur cover. These dark cushion covers stand out well against an off-white or beige wall.
Green Cushion, Caramel, and Natural Tones
The "L’Envol" cushion cover pairs a sage green background with beige and ecru embroidered owls. This setting easily accompanies a natural fabric, beige, or taupe sofa. "Lisbonne" green and "Lisbonne" caramel cushions, in woven-effect cotton, complete this ambiance. Their rectangular 30 × 60 cm format brings a different line in front of the square cushions. For a simple decoration, a beige armchair can accommodate a single "L’Envol" cover. On a wider sofa, two "Lisbonne" covers frame an embroidered cushion. A light wood floor and a few rattan or raw wood elements reinforce this soft and classic ensemble. Here again, the price varies according to the material and the details of each cushion cover.
Reversible Cushion Covers to Easily Change Ambiance
The "Double jeu" models provide more flexibility. The paprika cover features a solid side and a gray and beige striped side. The khaki green, ink blue, and caramel versions follow the same principle. A paprika "Double jeu" cushion enlivens a gray sofa, while the khaki green cushions go well with a beige or ecru seat. Ink blue works easily with an off-white sofa, medium parquet flooring, and a light gray rug. These covers also make it possible to modify the look of the living room without replacing the cushions. You just need to flip the cover over to switch from a bold color to a more discreet decor. This reversibility is a factor to consider in the price.
Housse de coussin: Animal Embroidery, Fringes, and Faux Fur
Sylvie Thiriez also offers more figurative cushion covers. "RDV au Pré" features embroidered donkeys, in beige 45 × 45 cm or black 30 × 60 cm, with a fringed finish. On an olive green or light brown sofa, these cushions easily fit into a country-inspired decoration. "Roxy", "Betty", "Spitzberg", and "Léo" (khaki version) respectively introduce a dog, a cat, a bear, and a leopard. A green "Roxy" cushion cover can dress up a beige velvet armchair; pink "Betty" brings a softer note to a white or light gray bed. Finally, the "Cocon" cushion covers, in white or ebony faux fur, add texture. A white "Cocon" cushion placed in front of colored cushions brightens the whole look. The price then depends on the format, material, and chosen finishes.
