How to choose the right sheet size?

Are you planning to replace the bed sheets in your bedroom but unsure which size to choose?

With nearly 40 years of expertise in designing and distributing bed linen, the Sylvie Thiriez brand explains which dimensions to choose depending on whether you have a single or double bed.

Follow the guide!

Which sheet size should you choose?

First of all, we recommend checking the dimensions of your mattress. To do so, use a tape measure to measure its length and width. Depending on the size of your mattress, you can choose a flat sheet measuring 180x290, 240x310 or 270x310 cm. Be careful not to confuse a flat sheet with a fitted sheet (with elasticated corners), as they serve different purposes and do not have the same dimensions. The choice of a flat sheet size depends on the desired drop on the sides of the bed and the width of the top fold you would like at the head of the bed to cover your duvet or blanket.

If you have specific expectations regarding the drop and top fold, you can carry out the following calculation to determine the optimal sheet size: (mattress length + top fold) x (mattress width + drop x2). To make things easier for you, we suggest below which sheet size to choose depending on whether you have a small or large single bed, a standard double bed, a queen size or a king size bed. If in doubt, feel free to consult our dedicated size guide. Both comprehensive and intuitive, it will allow you to quickly determine the required dimensions for your flat sheet, fitted sheet or duvet cover. Can’t find a model that fits your bedding’s unusual shape or dimensions? The Sylvie Thiriez brand offers to design your bed linen to the dimensions of your choice. What sheet size for a double bed?

If you sleep on a standard double bed measuring 140x190 or 140x200 cm, we recommend choosing a flat sheet measuring 240x310 cm. A slightly smaller format, 240x300 cm, is also available if you prefer a smaller top fold at the head of the bed.

However, if you have a wider bed such as a queen size mattress (160x200 cm) or a king size mattress (180x200 cm), you will need to choose a large-format flat sheet measuring 270x310 cm. The same applies if you have an adjustable bed with raised head and foot sections measuring 2x80x200 cm.

What sheet size for a single bed?

For an adult or child single bed measuring 90x190 or 90x200 cm, a 180x290 cm flat sheet will be sufficient. However, for a 120x190 cm single or small double bed, it is better to choose a longer and wider flat sheet measuring 240x310 cm to achieve a nice drop and a sufficient top fold. We also offer several intermediate formats (240x300 cm) compatible with single or small double mattresses. You can now choose your new sheets with complete peace of mind, without worrying about size mistakes. Beyond dimensions, the choice of fabric is essential when selecting bed sheets.

At Sylvie Thiriez, our collections are made exclusively from high-quality natural fibres. 57-thread-count cotton, stonewashed linen, 80-thread-count cotton percale or 71-thread-count washed percale: all our fabrics are carefully selected to ensure comfort, breathability and durability. Available in a wide range of styles and colours, they make it easy to coordinate your sheets with your bed linen set and the rest of your interior décor.
