How to machine wash bed sheets?

Careful and regular maintenance of bed linen helps preserve its brightness and freshness over time, allowing it to be replaced less often.

The Sylvie Thiriez brand, a home linen specialist for nearly 40 years, shares its advice on how to machine wash your bed sheets according to their material.

On the programme: choosing the right wash cycle, care frequency and even traditional tips for tackling stubborn stains!

At what temperature should you wash your sheets?

First of all, we recommend checking the material of your sheets. Do not hesitate to refer to the product label, which also indicates care instructions (washing, drying, ironing).

At Sylvie Thiriez, all our bed sheets can be machine-washed at 60°C, whether they are made from 57-thread-count cotton, linen, 80-thread-count cotton percale or 71-thread-count washed percale. You may use the pre-set fabric programmes on your washing machine (cotton, synthetic, delicate, etc.).

If in doubt, you can consult our bed linen care guide, which details our recommendations material by material.

What is the best way to wash bed sheets?

We recommend using a mild detergent to wash your bed sheets, especially if they are made from delicate fibres such as linen or percale. In addition, it is best to place only your bed linen set in the washing machine. Overloading the machine may damage the drum and result in less effective cleaning and rinsing, or even premature wear of the fabric.

The same applies to tumble drying: if overloaded, your laundry may dry less efficiently and clump together due to heat and humidity.

How often should you change your sheets?

The frequency of sheet care depends on the material as well as the season: we tend to sweat more in summer, which requires more regular cleaning. It is recommended to wash cotton, cotton percale or washed percale bed sheets once a week.

If you have chosen a linen model, a particularly light and breathable fabric, changing your sheets every two weeks is generally sufficient to keep your bed linen clean.

You are free to adjust the washing frequency according to the season and your personal preferences.

How to remove blood stains from a sheet?

You have just noticed a blood stain on your bed sheet? No time to lose: immediately rub the stain with an ice cube. This simple method delivers excellent results on fresh stains. You can also soak the stained area in cold water. Hot water should be avoided, as it may set the stain.

If the blood stain is already set, we recommend pouring a few drops of white vinegar onto the stained area, then waiting a few minutes for the vinegar to penetrate the fabric fibres. You can then machine wash your sheet, making sure to select a low-temperature cycle (maximum 30°C). With these tips, there is no need for stain remover or chemical products — you should be able to remove the stain easily and without elbow grease!

Once your sheets are clean, several drying options are available. Moderate-temperature tumble drying is ideal for cotton sheets; however, air drying or low-temperature drying is preferable for linen or percale models. These lightweight fabrics dry within a few hours when properly hung outdoors or in a well-ventilated room. All that remains is to iron and fold your sheets so they are ready for their next use.
