What is a bed sheet?

A bed sheet can serve several purposes: it can be placed between the sleeper’s body and the duvet cover, used to protect the duvet when there is no cover,

or laid directly on the mattress as an alternative to a fitted sheet.

As an expert in the design and distribution of bed linen, Sylvie Thiriez shares her tips for choosing the right sheets —

especially when it comes to sizing — and maintaining them properly to ensure they last as long as possible.

How to choose bed sheets?

When buying new bed sheets, several factors should be taken into account. The first step is to check the dimensions you need — we’ll cover this in more detail shortly. Next, choosing the right fabric is essential. At Sylvie Thiriez, our designers have carefully selected natural, high-quality textiles. We offer sheets in cotton, percale, washed percale, and linen, all known for their comfort, durability, and breathability.

We strongly advise against synthetic sheets such as polyester: these artificial fibers tend to block airflow, which can lead to excessive perspiration or overheating during the night. For children’s bedding, 100% cotton sheets are best — ideally organic.

You’ll also find a wide variety of flat sheets in our bed linen collections: solid colors or printed patterns, from floral and contemporary styles to more rustic mountain-inspired designs. It’s up to you to choose the one that best matches your bedroom décor.

You can either go for a sheet that matches the rest of your bedding set, or embrace the mix & match trend by combining different shades, prints, or materials.

How to choose the right size for your bed sheets?

As mentioned earlier, size is the first criterion to consider when choosing new bed sheets. To make your shopping easier, Sylvie Thiriez provides an online size guide. To determine the right format, we recommend checking — and if needed, measuring — the dimensions of your mattress.

If you have a single bed measuring 90x190 cm or 90x200 cm, opt for sheets sized 180x290 cm. Sheets measuring 240x310 cm are versatile and suitable for small double beds (120x190 cm) as well as standard double mattresses (140x190 cm or 140x200 cm).

We also offer some models in a slightly smaller format (240x300 cm) that are suitable for these same beds.
For wider beds such as queen size (160x200 cm) or king size (180x200 cm), choose the largest sheet size: 270x310 cm. This size is also ideal for adjustable beds with lift-up head and foot sections.

Can’t find sheets that fit your non-standard mattress? We offer a custom-made service, allowing you to order bed linen in solid cotton or percale in the exact dimensions you need.

Comment entretenir des draps de lit ?

All Sylvie Thiriez bed sheets can be machine washed at 60°C. We recommend using a gentle detergent, especially for linen or percale models. Cotton sheets can be safely tumble dried on a medium temperature setting. However, we advise air drying your linen, cotton percale, and washed percale sheets to better preserve the delicate fibers of these fabrics.

Drying your sheets outdoors in the shade or in a well-ventilated room will generally take just a few hours — or up to a full day — if they are properly hung. If you prefer machine drying, select a low-heat program to protect the fabric and reduce creasing. Once dry, you can iron your sheets at a low to moderate temperature, depending on the fabric.

For optimal freshness and hygiene, it's recommended to wash your bed linen every one to two weeks.
