How to dry bed sheets?

Air drying or tumble drying, drying programmes and duration, tips to prevent your sheets from tangling into a ball: Sylvie Thiriez, the home linen brand, shares a few good habits to adopt to dry your bed sheets efficiently and keep them in good condition over time.

Which tumble dryer programme should you choose for bed sheets?

First of all, be aware that the drying method depends on the material of your sheets. The type of fabric helps determine whether air drying or tumble drying at low or moderate temperature is more appropriate. If you have chosen a 57-thread-count cotton model, known for its easy care and resistance to frequent washing, you can tumble dry it using a medium temperature programme. It will generally be dry in under an hour. Whenever possible, it is preferable to hang linen, cotton percale or washed percale sheets outdoors or in a well-ventilated room.

By letting them air dry, you avoid any risk of prematurely damaging the fibres of these more delicate fabrics. A few hours are usually enough to dry these lightweight materials. Avoid any direct exposure to sunlight, which could cause the sheet to fade. We also advise against placing damp laundry on or near a radiator. If you prefer to tumble dry your bed sheets, choose a low-temperature cycle to limit creasing and fabric wear.

If you are unsure about the material or care instructions for your sheets, refer to the product label and consult our bed linen care guide.

Why do sheets get tangled in the tumble dryer?

You have probably experienced this before: sheets often tangle into a ball in the tumble dryer and come out poorly dried and wrinkled. This inconvenience is caused by the build-up of heat and moisture and is particularly likely when the dryer is overloaded. To avoid this balling effect, we recommend not overfilling your tumble dryer and ideally drying your sheets only with the rest of the bed linen set. Beforehand, make sure to properly fasten your duvet cover if it has buttons or ties, or at least fold it in on itself with the opening placed in the centre. This will prevent pillowcases or sheets from slipping inside.

Using dryer balls, or a tennis ball as an alternative, is an effective way to limit static electricity and prevent sheets from tangling in the tumble dryer. By improving the circulation of hot air, the balls help reduce drying time and electricity consumption. Your sheets are now clean and dry: all that remains is to iron them before storing them in a cool, dry place. Choose a high ironing temperature for cotton bed sheets and opt for moderate heat for linen, percale or washed percale models.

Ironing is optional for linen and washed percale sheets, which have a naturally crinkled look and can be folded and stored directly. It is recommended to wash bed linen every week if it is made of cotton or percale. For linen sheets, cleaning every 15 days is generally sufficient. The frequency of care should be adjusted according to your personal preferences and the season: in summer, feel free to wash your sheets more often so you can slip into fresh, clean bedding.
