What is a fitted sheet?

The fitted sheet is an essential element of bed linen: it protects the mattress from dirt, wear and perspiration, helping to prevent damage over time.

When carefully chosen, it provides comfort and softness for the sleeper.

Below, Sylvie Thiriez shares practical advice to help you choose, care for and fit a fitted sheet.

How to choose your fitted sheet?

When choosing a fitted sheet, several criteria should be taken into account, starting with the dimensions, which must match those of your mattress. We also recommend paying attention to the pocket depth. These are the elasticated sections located at the corners of the fitted sheet, which allow it to stay securely in place without creating wrinkles. The choice of pocket depth depends on the thickness of the mattress. Next, it is important to decide on the desired fabric. Sylvie Thiriez bed linen is available in several natural textiles such as cotton, linen, percale and washed percale. These high-quality materials are soft, durable and breathable, helping to regulate temperature and offering excellent longevity. Price will also influence your choice, depending on the fabric and the dimensions of the product. A cotton fitted sheet offers excellent value for money, thanks to its many advantages at a moderate price. If you have a higher budget, it may be worth opting for a more premium model, such as a percale fitted sheet. Finally, don’t overlook the importance of style and colour, to ensure your fitted sheet matches or harmonises with the rest of your bed linen.

How to care for a fitted sheet?

All Sylvie Thiriez fitted sheets can be machine washed at 60°C. Cotton models can be tumble-dried at a moderate temperature. Percale, washed percale and linen bed linen is best air-dried; however, it can also be tumble-dried if necessary. In this case, choose a low-temperature programme to prevent creasing.

When it comes to ironing, cotton and percale fitted sheets can be ironed at a high temperature. For washed percale and linen models, opt for a medium heat setting, as ironing is optional due to their naturally crinkled appearance. To enjoy clean and fresh sheets, we recommend caring for your bed linen every one to two weeks.

How to put on a fitted sheet?

To properly fit your fitted sheet, it is recommended to check the position of the label on the product: it should generally be placed at the lower right corner of your mattress. Once positioned the right way round, simply wrap the mattress using the elasticated corners of the fitted sheet. You can start with either the two top or bottom corners, or begin with the left-hand corners followed by the right-hand ones. Some people prefer to work diagonally, fitting the top left and bottom right corners first, then the top right and bottom left corners (or vice versa).

Is the elastic of your fitted sheet stretched out? It may be worth replacing it or using fitted sheet straps. If your mattress has a smooth surface and your fitted sheet tends to slip, investing in a non-slip mattress protector can also be an effective solution.

How to choose the right fitted sheet size?

Choosing the right size for your new fitted sheet is simple: just match the fitted sheet dimensions to those of your mattress. If you have a standard double bed, choose a fitted sheet measuring 140190 or 140200 cm, depending on the length of the mattress. For a queen size bed, opt for a 160200 cm model, and for a king size mattress, choose 180200 cm. Sleeping on a single bed? The same logic applies: for a 90190 cm mattress, you will need a 90190 cm fitted sheet, and so on for 90200 cm and 120190 cm beds.
