How to put on a fitted sheet?

Does your fitted sheet tend to shift during the night, leaving you frustrated to find your bed all wrinkled in the morning? Wondering how to fix this issue? You’re in the right place. A home linen specialist, and more specifically a bed linen expert, for nearly 40 years, Sylvie Thiriez shares her tips on how to put on a fitted sheet so it stays securely in place throughout the night.

How can you keep fitted sheets in place?

To make sure your fitted sheet stays in place, start by choosing a model that matches the dimensions of your mattress. The rule is simple: select a fitted sheet with the same size as your mattress—for example, a 140x200 cm fitted sheet for a 140x200 cm double bed, and so on.

Can’t find the right model for your bedding? No problem—at Sylvie Thiriez, we offer a made-to-measure bed linen service in the dimensions of your choice. Contact our customer service team to find out more.

It is also best to choose a strong, high-quality fitted sheet. Otherwise, the elastic may loosen quickly and prevent the fitted sheet from staying in place. When putting on a fitted sheet, always position it so that the label is located at the bottom right when you are facing the bed. Then cover the mattress using the elasticated corners of the fitted sheet, known as the “depths”. You can start with the lower or upper corners, on the left or right—it’s up to you.

If the fitted sheet is slightly too small for your mattress, it is recommended to put it on diagonally, fitting the top left corner and the bottom right corner first, then the remaining two corners. Does your fitted sheet tend to slip during the night? This may be due to worn or stretched elastic. Two solutions are available: you can replace your fitted sheet or secure it using fitted sheet straps. A particularly smooth mattress can also cause a fitted sheet to slip; in this case, a non-slip mattress protector usually solves the problem.

How do you put a fitted sheet on a heavy mattress?

The thickness of a mattress affects its weight. To make it easier to put a fitted sheet on a heavy, thick mattress, choose a model with an appropriate depth. Add around 5 cm to the height of the mattress to find the corresponding depth size.

At Sylvie Thiriez, our fitted sheets generally feature a 30 cm depth, suitable for most mattresses (up to 25 cm thick). We also offer several models with a 40 cm depth, designed for the thickest mattresses.

If you have a heavy mattress and suffer from back pain, it may be worth investing in a mattress lifter, which makes changing your sheets easier while protecting your back.

Should you use a fitted sheet in a travel cot?

A travel cot is a very practical sleeping solution for weekends away or holidays for young parents and their little ones aged from 3 months to 3 years. It is recommended to use a fitted sheet in a travel cot for hygiene and comfort reasons. Choose a soft, breathable 100% cotton model (ideally organic), a fabric known for its thermoregulating properties. A quality fitted sheet helps absorb perspiration, spit-up and small accidents, effectively protecting the mattress. Easy to care for, a cotton fitted sheet can be machine washed and tumble dried. The standard mattress size for a travel cot is 60x120 cm; however, we recommend checking your own mattress dimensions before purchasing. By choosing a fitted sheet in the correct size, you ensure it stays securely in place on your baby’s mattress.

You now have all the tips you need to put a fitted sheet on your mattress quickly and ensure it stays perfectly in place. It’s up to you!
