How to care for a fitted sheet?

Caring for a fitted sheet requires following a few basic rules: discover Sylvie Thiriez’s tips for washing, drying, ironing and folding.

The care of a fitted sheet varies depending on its fabric: synthetic, 57-thread cotton, cotton percale, linen or washed percale. Sylvie Thiriez, a brand specialized in the design and distribution of home linens, shares its advice for effectively washing, drying, ironing and carefully folding your fitted sheets.

How to iron a fitted sheet?

We recommend ironing your cotton or cotton percale fitted sheet at a high temperature. Do you own a washed cotton, washed percale or linen model? Ironing these naturally crinkled fabrics is not essential. However, you may iron them at a moderate temperature if you wish. We advise not to press too firmly around the fitted corners to prevent the elastic from stretching.

Do not hesitate to smooth the fitted sheet by hand beforehand to reduce unwanted creases and make ironing easier.

How to wash a fitted sheet?

All Sylvie Thiriez fitted sheets can be machine-washed at 60°C, whether they are made of cotton, linen, percale or washed percale. You may also use your washing machine’s pre-set programs such as “cotton”, “delicate” or “synthetic”, which usually run for several hours. We recommend washing only your bed linen set and avoiding overloading the machine to ensure an effective wash. In addition, choose a mild detergent and natural solutions for stain removal and deodorizing, especially for linen bed linens.

How to fold a fitted sheet?

Start by holding the fitted sheet lengthwise. You can place it on your bed, an ironing board or simply on a large table for support. Make sure the side with the seams is facing you. Insert the two bottom corners into the two top corners. Adjust so that the corners align neatly on top of each other. Still lengthwise, fold the left side over, then fold the right side over it. All that’s left is to fold the fitted sheet in half, then in quarters — and you’re done!

An alternative method consists of holding the fitted sheet widthwise and placing all four corners inside each other. Some people choose to store fitted sheets and pillowcases inside the folded duvet cover to keep the entire bed linen set together.

Can a fitted sheet be tumble-dried?

Easy to care for, cotton fitted sheets can be tumble-dried at a moderate temperature. Allow at least 30–40 minutes of drying time. If you have chosen a linen, percale or washed percale model, air drying is preferable, ideally outdoors. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, especially for linen bed linens, as they may fade. Although these fabrics are lightweight, it may take several hours or even a full day for your fitted sheet to dry completely. When drying indoors, avoid placing your laundry in a damp room or near a radiator.

If you do not have access to an outdoor space or a sufficiently dry and ventilated area, tumble-drying remains an option. To prevent creasing, we recommend selecting a low-heat setting. As with washing, avoid overloading your dryer. Unsure about the fabric or care instructions for your fitted sheet? Refer to the product label — a simple habit that helps avoid mistakes. Once your fitted sheet is washed, dried, ironed and folded, all that’s left is to store it in a cool, dry place until its next use. To maintain the freshness and brightness of your bed linen, it is recommended to repeat this care routine every one to two weeks, depending on the fabric.
