How to properly wash a duvet cover?

Need advice on how to wash your duvet cover without damaging it? You’re in the right place! Sylvie Thiriez, a home linen specialist with nearly 40 years of expertise, shares her washing tips for bed linen made of cotton, linen, percale, or silk.
Follow the guide to get started with the basics of proper duvet cover care!
Can you wash a duvet cover in a washing machine?

All Sylvie Thiriez duvet covers can be machine washed at a minimum of 30°C. We advise you to check the product label for specific washing instructions: indeed, washing differs depending on whether the duvet cover is cotton, linen, percale, or silk. We recommend using natural detergents and avoiding harsh chemicals, especially on delicate fabrics like linen and silk. Moreover, it is better not to overload your washing machine for an effective wash and to preserve the drum.
Note that, conversely, not all duvet covers can be tumble dried. For example, silk bed linen must be air-dried. Other fabrics, such as cotton, linen, or percale, can be dried either outdoors or in a tumble dryer, provided the recommended drying temperature is respected (usually low or medium).
Which washing machine program to choose for a duvet cover?
The washing cycle choice depends on the fabric of your duvet cover. For a silk model, select a program at a maximum of 30°C and use a special silk detergent or, if unavailable, one for delicate fabrics. You can select a 40°C program for a double gauze cotton duvet cover and opt for a 60°C wash for models in 57-thread cotton, linen, 80-thread cotton percale, or 71-thread washed percale.
Feel free to use your washing machine’s pre-set cycles such as “cotton,” “delicate,” or “synthetic.” Again, if you’re unsure about your duvet cover’s fabric, the best move is to check the label or product sheet where material and care instructions are detailed.

Should I wash my duvet cover inside out?

It is essential to turn your duvet cover inside out before any machine wash. This simple step helps preserve the brightness and colors of your bed linen. However, it is not necessary to turn your duvet cover inside out when tumble drying. To prevent it from coming out in a ball, a useful trick is to close the duvet cover or fold it over at the opening before starting the drying program. This will also prevent wet laundry from accumulating inside the cover at the end of the cycle.
Finally, we recommend turning your duvet cover inside out when ironing, especially if it is a silk model.
How often should a duvet cover be washed?
The washing frequency depends on the fabric and personal preferences. We recommend weekly washing for cotton, washed cotton, cotton percale, washed percale, or cotton gauze duvet covers. Every two weeks is sufficient for linen or silk bed linen. Once your duvet cover is out of the washing machine, you can tumble dry it or air dry depending on the model.
Ironing is optional for some naturally wrinkled textiles like cotton gauze, washed percale, or linen; however, it is recommended for cotton, silk, and cotton percale. Be sure to use low or medium heat to avoid damaging the fabric. Your duvet cover is now ready to be folded and stored in a cool, dry cupboard!
